Cold And Flu Season Hitting Your Workplace Hard?

Cold and flu season has hit all 50 states. And according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Maryland is among the states with the highest level of flu.

That can mean high absenteeism – as long as you have told your employees to not come to work sick. No one needs to be working when they have the flu, because it’s highly contagious and could put your other employees and your customers at risk, even if they got the flu shot.

While keeping people who are sick out of the office, store, production floor, etc. is the best way to prevent the spread of flu in your workplace, your commercial cleaning company can help prevent the spread as well.

While much of this should be common practice, it’s especially important during cold and flu season to disinfect areas of your workplace that a bunch of people touch, or anything that someone who came down with the flu has touched. Your janitorial services team or commercial cleaning crew can do several things, including:

  • Wipe down all phone handsets, doorknobs, keyboards, elevator buttons, etc.
  • Wipe down the breakroom coffee pot, microwave, refrigerator
  • Wipe down bathroom door handles, faucets, toilet handles, etc.
  • Wipe down vending machine buttons
  • Wipe down drinking fountains

As an employer, you should consider providing a bottle of hand sanitizer for each of your employees, and one or two for the public to use – say at the receptionist’s desk. You should also consider providing disinfecting wipes where people can wipe down their phone or keyboard if they share it with someone on another shift.
