Why Heat Waves and Dust Are a Dangerous Pair

Dust behaves like insulation in the one place you least want it. A film on server intakes and heat sinks holds heat against components that were designed to shed it.

The effect compounds through the system. Clogged CRAC and HVAC filters cut airflow, which means less cool air reaching the equipment that needs it. Fans respond by spinning harder and drawing more power. Thermal alarms and throttling follow.

All of that lands during the months when outside air gives your cooling equipment the least help. In February, a system running at 80 percent has room to absorb a problem. In July, that same margin is already spent.

There's a cost angle worth stating plainly. Cooling already accounts for a large share of a facility's power use, and data center dust control keeps that number from climbing further. Dust functions as an efficiency tax you pay every hour of every hot month.

Where the Dust Comes From in Central Arkansas

Even sealed facilities take on dust, and Little Rock supplies plenty of it.

In a raised-floor facility, the plenum beneath the tiles is the air highway. Dust down there gets delivered straight to server intakes.

That makes raised floor cleaning one of the highest-value tasks in the building, and one of the least visible. Nobody walks past the subfloor and notices it needs attention.

A proper cycle covers the plenum itself, the underside of tiles and grilles, and cable-tray dusting, since trays collect debris that eventually falls into the airstream.

Subfloor work is also when zinc whiskers turn up. These are tiny metal filaments that can grow on aging galvanized surfaces under raised floors, and they can break loose and cause short circuits in equipment. Checking for them belongs in any thorough subfloor inspection, particularly in older facilities.

Cleaning the plenum on a scheduled cycle keeps that space working as designed rather than functioning as a dust reservoir with a fan attached.

Cleaning a Critical Environment Isn't Regular Janitorial

The wrong cleaning crew is a risk to the room. Critical environment cleaning has its own equipment, products, and rules for good reason.

Standard vacuums exhaust fine dust straight back into the air. In a room engineered around air handling, that makes conditions worse than leaving the dust alone. HEPA-filtered equipment is the baseline.

The rest matters too. Anti-static and low-lint tools instead of cotton rags that shed fibers. No liquids near energized equipment. Crews trained on what never gets touched, including cables, switches, and EPO buttons. The same standard applies to the server rooms inside banks, hospitals, and offices across the metro. Server room cleaning gets skipped in most janitorial contracts, often deliberately, because nobody wants a general crew in there. A Summer-Ready Dust Control Program

Schedule the deep clean before July, not after the first thermal alarm. That's the whole argument for treating this as a calendar item.

A working program covers each zone on its own cycle, running quarterly to annually depending on activity level:

  • The subfloor plenum and floor tiles

  • Above-ceiling return plenums

  • Support spaces, including staging and decommission areas

Around that, a few habits do most of the work. Coordinate cleaning with your HVAC vendor's filter-change schedule so the two aren't happening months apart. Set install and decommission cleanup rules in writing, since that's when most avoidable debris enters. And keep documentation, which matters for audits and for customer tours where a visibly clean floor answers questions before anyone asks.
