Q&A: Carpet Protector

Q:  What is carpet protector and what does it do?

A:  Carpet protectors such as Scotchgard form a protective barrier around your carpet fibers. This barrier keeps new spills and spots to the top surface of the carpet, where they are easier to clean and remove. Protectants make even your regular vacuuming more efficient because soiling cannot adhere as easily, or penetrate as deeply, where protectants are applied.

Q:  I had protectant applied last time I had my carpets cleaned. Do I need it applied again?

A:  Traffic, vacuuming and cleaning will wear away carpet protector over time. For this reason, carpet protector should be re-applied at least every time your carpets are professionally cleaned. Carpet manufacturers recommend having your carpet cleaned and protected every 12 to 18 months to preserve your warranties and keep your carpet looking great.

Q:  Does carpet protector help remove existing spots and stains?

No. But it will guard against future spots and spills from penetrating deep into the carpet fibers. Essentially, properly applied carpet protectors will repel spots and reduce the chances of permanent stains.

Q:  I have carpet with stain protection built in. Do I still need carpet protector applied during my ServiceMaster cleanings?

A:  Additional layers of protector will only enhance your carpet’s ability to repel new spots and spills.

Q:  Where is the best place to apply carpet protector?

You can have protector applied in any areas you wish, including on upholstered furniture and area rugs. High traffic areas are particularly good places to have protected, as soils are abrasive and damaging to your carpet. The majority of soil is typically in the main entry, though hallways, pathways around beds and walkways to sofas and chairs are also highly susceptible to large amounts of damaging soils.
